We are Thrilled to share that UWMRRC student, Zachary Welchel (far right), has been awarded the Health Physics Society (HPS) Accelerator Section Lutz Moritz Award for his outstanding work titled:

“Monte Carlo Radiation Shielding Analysis of a Novel Multi-Source Electron Beam Assembly for 3D Printing and Imaging.”

This work presents a radiation shielding analysis for a versatile electron beam printing device equipped with a multi-source printing assembly. This assembly is designed for both EBM and tomographic imaging, requiring a thorough assessment of potential radiation hazards. The shielding performance was evaluated using Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport (MCNP) code. Original CAD models for imaging and printing configurations were converted into a mesh format to facilitate unstructured mesh (UM) transport within the MCNP framework. Discussion regarding the establishment of the photon source model used and the corresponding spatially dependent dose map is presented for a lead-shielded printing enclosure.
